The first step in helping a child heal is to show them without a shadow of a doubt that they are not alone. This does not just mean not alone in their trauma, but also not alone in their personal development.
No matter how you times you tell a child of abuse you understand or you are there for them, they won’t believe it until… until they see it.
A myth is that the only way you can help a youth in a dysfunctional situation is to have been a youth of dysfunction. While this may help you personally relate it is not a prerequisite to changing a child’s life.
The true key for showing a youth you understand and helping them down the path of community is one word; endurance.
You must show them you are there for the long haul. No matter how much they push, how much they kick or how much they try escape you aren’t going anywhere. You are there to support them, teach them and love them.
So how do we do this at A HUMAN PROJECT? Simple. We listen, we care, we understand and we give the youth tools to learn. We work to build a community around the youth that is full of loving adult leaders and other youth mentors. Not only to we provide them with a community around them we also provide them with a virtual learning center.
Our online educational learning center provides our youth with the tools needed to gain a new perspective on their possibilities. Giving them the self awareness to achieve at the highest levels of life.
All growth must happen over time and can not happen with just a wave of a magic wand. One of the must critical steps in any type of growth is self worth. A youth that has been through any type of abuse regardless of the ‘type’ or ‘amount’ struggles with self worth.
Now that A HUMAN PROJECT has helped them understand they are not alone and given them the tools enhance their learning, we can now focus on building their self worth.
Perhaps the hardest of the steps is helping a youth understand they are worth something on this planet. After years and years of being told they worthless we begin the long journey on helping them see they are not worthless and do hold the keys to endless possibilities.
While every child is different there are systems AHP has developed to help ensure a high percentage of success. We start with changing the focus from ‘can’t’ to ‘can’. A very simple statement with a very powerful outcome.
